Why should one ask for God?

“Ask for God, and the Spirit will be given to you… Why should I ask? And why is the heart so important before God?

One of the teachings known in all faiths is this: if there is even the smallest particle of true faith in your heart, there is nothing you cannot accomplish. Because Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it.

Faith, heart, and asking… that is, ‘to ask from the heart with faith’ forms the foundation of what God expects from us. If the true belief systems brought by God’s messenger — the ones that lead a person to God — are examined carefully, and if the veils of confusion before them are lifted with objective intentions, the essence of all is to ask for God from the heart.

This belief system may have once come to a tribe and disappeared into the dusty pages of history. Its fate is unknown.

Perhaps it rules the majority of the world today. But one truth does not change: we must ask for God and, as human beings, obtain the freedom we deserve.

For, ‘Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.’

Abraham was thrown into the fire because he would not bow to idols, but the flames did not touch him; the fire turned into peace and safety. Centuries later three young men were thrown into the furnace because they refused to bow to anyone but their Lord. As the flames rose, they asked: ‘O Lord, deliver us from this fire!’ With their hearts turned to God, their chains were broken, and the fire could not harm them.

Whoever believes and asks for God has God in his heart. And he belongs to God. God says to the servant whose heart He possesses: ‘You are mine.’  As long as he asks, he belongs to God. God influences the heart of the human He created. With the Holy Spirit — the Helper He said, ‘I have given to you’ — He takes hold of him. The Spirit is in that person; He will teach him everything and remind him of the truth. And now God is with that person.

Do not store up treasures on earth or in heaven… For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.’ Our hearts must be in God, for He is life itself, our true treasure.

Moses, when trapped between the sea and Pharaoh’s army, said: “My Lord is with me” — showing the power of asking God even in the midst of despair. Job, in endless suffering, only said: “Harm has touched me; and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful” — showing the power of a sincere and simple request. Jonah, swallowed into the darkness in the belly of the fish, cried out: “There is no god but You!” This cry, rising from helplessness, opened the gates of deliverance. Zechariah, in his old age, said: “My Lord, grant me from Yourself a pure offspring.” His request, and the child granted through it — which made the impossible possible — changed the course of history. And David, in the midst of his enemies, said: “My Lord, You are my shield” — teaching that asking from the heart is an unshakable refuge for man.

And a few more beautiful words from the Holy Scriptures and from beloved souls…

‘The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear Him; He hears their cry and saves them.’

‘I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.’

‘I tried to make sense of the Four Books, until love arrived, and it all became a single syllable.’

‘Do not let me wander from Your love… Let me find myself with You.
