At the foundation of all God’s teachings lies this way: God calls; a person responds in faith, seeks, asks for God, and finally reaches Him. This writing shows how this essential way unfolds through Wisdom: Wisdom first calls; a person seeks it as silver, asks for it as something more precious than all else, and finally comes to know God closely.
In the book of Proverbs, Wisdom does not merely give advice; Wisdom calls. Wisdom speaks, invites the human heart onto the road, calls to be sought, and finally reveals itself. For this reason, wisdom in the book of Proverbs is not only about “being wise”; it is about seeking and asking. To seek Wisdom, or John’s “Word,” is in fact to seek God and to ask for God.
One of the strongest echoes of this search is heard at the beginning of the Gospel of John:
John 1:1-4
“In the beginning was the Word. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He was with God in the beginning.
Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made.
In Him was life, and that life was the light of men.”
Here, the “Word” is not merely a spoken word. It is the truth that was in the beginning, active in creation, and giving life. This writing seeks to read Wisdom in Proverbs in the light of John. For what is said about Wisdom in Proverbs can be read as a road moving toward this understanding of the “Word.”
Wisdom First Becomes a Voice
Proverbs 1:20-23
“Wisdom cries aloud outside,
Raises her voice in the public squares.
At the head of the busy streets she calls out,
At the entrance of the city gates she speaks:
‘How long will you who are simple love your simple ways?
How long will mockers delight in mockery?
How long will fools hate knowledge?
Turn at my rebuke; then I will open my heart to you
And help you understand my words.'”
First, the human being does not seek; first, Wisdom calls. This is where a person begins to seek God. Because hearing the call is the first step of seeking and asking.
In Chapter 2, Wisdom Becomes Something to Be Sought
Seeking God requires steadfastness.
Asking for God requires priority.
Proverbs 2:3-5
“Yes, if you call out for insight,
And cry aloud for understanding,
If you seek it as silver,
And search for it as hidden treasure,
Then you will understand the fear of the LORD
And know God closely.”
Seeking God is like this: not on the surface, but like searching for silver, with effort and without giving up. Here, seeking means effort, continuity, and knowing the worth of what is sought.
Asking for God is also like this: like searching for hidden treasure, with the deepest desire of the heart and with a longing that cannot rest until it finds.
Matthew 13:44
“The Kingdom of Heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.”
Because when a person finds the true treasure, he can no longer live as before.
Wisdom is no longer only something sought; it becomes something desired and asked for, whose gain is better than everything else.
Proverbs 3:13-15
“Blessed is the one who reaches wisdom,
And the one who finds understanding!
For gaining wisdom is better than gaining silver,
And its profit is better than gold.
She is more precious than jewels;
Nothing you desire can compare with her.”
Here Wisdom is not merely knowledge to be learned; it is a treasure to be held above all things. As a person seeks it, he sees its worth; and as he sees its worth, he asks for it more deeply.
Proverbs 4:5-7
“Get wisdom, get understanding;
Do not forget my words or turn away from them.
Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you;
Love her, and she will watch over you.
The beginning of wisdom is this: get wisdom.
Though it cost all you have, get understanding.”
Wisdom here is a reality to be possessed, loved, not left behind, and valued above all else. This is another face of asking: the heart choosing what is most precious.
Wisdom is kept in the heart, with a desire that continues there.
Proverbs 4:23
“Above all else, guard your heart,
for life flows from it.”
Proverbs 7:1-4
“My son, keep my words,
Store up my commands within you.
Keep my commands and you will live;
Guard my teaching as the apple of your eye.
Bind them on your fingers,
Write them on the tablet of your heart.
Say to wisdom, ‘You are my sister.'”
Wisdom reveals itself and repeats God’s call.
Proverbs 8:1-4
“Does not wisdom call out?
Does not understanding raise her voice?
At the highest point along the way,
Where the paths meet, she takes her stand.
Beside the gate leading into the city,
At the entrance, she cries aloud:
‘To you, O people, I call out;
I raise my voice to all mankind.'”
The one who seeks finds. Just as it is said in Matthew 7: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened…”
Proverbs 8:17
“I love those who love me,
And those who seek me diligently find me.”
Seeking God is not empty.
Asking for God is not unanswered.
And the one who finds Wisdom finds life; because the Lord who says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life,” is life itself.
Proverbs 8:34-35
“Blessed is the one who listens to me,
Watching daily at my doors,
Waiting at my doorway.
For whoever finds me finds life
And receives favor from the LORD.”
Wisdom is in the beginning. Just like the Word…
Proverbs 8:22-23
“The LORD brought me forth as the first of his works,
Before his deeds of old;
I was formed long ages ago,
At the very beginning, before the world came to be.”
Proverbs 8:27
“When the Lord established the heavens, I was there…”
Here Wisdom is not merely a voice giving advice; Wisdom appears as a truth standing in the beginning, beside creation. This is why John’s word echoes powerfully here:
John 1:1-4
“In the beginning was the Word.
The Word was with God, and the Word was God…
All things were made through Him…
In Him was life.”
The Wisdom that is present in the beginning in Proverbs appears in John as the Word in the beginning. Both are spoken of together with beginning, creation, and life. Therefore, Wisdom and the Word can be read as two names of the same divine truth.
Conclusion
Wisdom traces a road:
- first, it calls
- then, it is sought
- then, it is asked for
- and finally, it is found.
As a person seeks God, he follows this Word. As a person asks for God, this asking grows. And in the end, a person reaches not merely knowledge, but Life.
Because Wisdom does not hold a person in itself; it leads the person to God. The One sought, the One asked for, and the One finally reached is God.
For this reason, in Scripture the search for Wisdom finally joins the call to seek the Lord. In Isaiah, the call is heard like this:
Isaiah 51:1-2
“Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness and who seek the Lord … Look to Abraham, your father …”
Here the call is not only to those who seek wisdom, but directly to those who seek the Lord. Because true Wisdom brings the human person to the Lord. The one who seeks the Word follows the voice of God; the one who asks for God eventually wants not only an answer, but God Himself.
This is why Wisdom is not merely knowledge that teaches what is right. It is the truth that opens to the Word in the beginning, leads the human person to Life, and draws the seeker near to God.
